The healing powers of boudoir

What does boudoir have to do with trauma and healing?

This is a tricky subject to write about. For one, because I’m not a licensed therapist. I’m a professional boudoir photographer, with no proper training on how to work with people trying to heal from past trauma.

But I have had traumatic experiences of my own. And in fact, my own first boudoir photoshoot I posed for was a transformative experience that had SO MUCH to do with my individual healing journey. It’s the reason I pivoted my career to become a boudoir photographer.

Does that mean a boudoir shoot is therapeutic for everyone? Of course not. But it very often is! I’ve met hundreds of incredible women over the years, and our vibe in the studio is very much that of a sisterhood. We inevitably connect and get to know each other. We share meaningful stories and experiences about who we are and what we’ve been through.

A 5-time repeat client, and a friend

I recently had the privilege of shooting one of my clients for the 5th time. It was her maternity shoot. I’ve gotten to know her so well over the years and I’ve seen her beautiful evolution. But when she walked into the studio, she’d just gotten some disappointing news and was in tears.

Without missing a beat, my team and I enveloped her in love, bringing her in and sitting her down so we could listen to what happened and console her. After we wrapped up with her amazing shoot, one of my teammates commented on how good it felt to be there for a fellow woman like that when she really needed someone to lean on.

It’s beautiful to me that we’ve created this rare space inside the Silk & Lace studio that is a safe place to show up as your authentic self. Where other women are there for you, to hold space for you, to make the whole experience special for you. It’s the kind of space that just invites everyone to let their guards down and be real. Something we all need, sometimes.

And in that kind of environment, where it’s safe to feel your feelings, we hear real stories from women about some of the hard things they’ve been through. These kinds of things just naturally come up! And usually, those hard things contributed to their reasons for booking a boudoir shoot to begin with.

Be on the lookout

I think we all intuitively know that choosing beautiful, meaningful experiences for ourselves is naturally healing. The kind of experiences that bring us closer to ourselves and our innate powers of overcoming hard things.

So again, I’m not a licensed therapist. But I’ve seen so many women leave our studio feeling more confident and empowered than they were before. And that’s enough to make a notable difference on a healing journey.

Always be on the lookout for experiences that will leave you feeling more connected to yourself. It’s one of the most powerful things you can do, no matter what you’ve been through.
